Los DC Pumas: El primer grupo de 4H Latino en MN

4H es un programa  que tiene el propósito de promover el desarrollo positivo de los jóvenes.  Este programa Tradicionalmente se dio con temas de agricultura en áreas rurales y actualmente promueve experiencias educativas fuera de la escuela por medio de los clubes, proyectos, y eventos para jóvenes de 5 y 19 años tanto en áreas rurales como urbanas. A continuación, Socorro Mercado residente de Dodge County MN nos describe su experiencia apoyando a sus hijos en la creación del primer club de 4h Latino  DC Pumas.

El 4H en general es un programa que apoya la creación de clubes y actividades para niños. Yo fui una de las que primero inició apoyando el club para niños Latinos en Dodge County. Es un programa para que los niños aprendan  a hacer proyectos. El club de Dodge County, en el que están mis hijos, se llama Pumas. Me gusta porque todos somos puros Latinos y hablamos español. Cada año se ha hecho un proyecto enfocado en la cultura y con sus proyectos el club de los Pumas ha llegado lejos. 

Cuando los clubes hacen proyectos, entran a competir en la feria del Condado con todos los clubes del Condado y si les va bien, van a competir a la feria del Estado con todos los demás clubes del Estado.  El club de los Pumas ha sido un invitado especial  para llevar sus proyectos a la feria del Estado.  Y los voluntarios adultos también hemos ido a la feria.  Al llegar vimos todo lo que hacen los niños en el 4H de toda Minnesota.  Uno dice:  “Wow” eso  lo hicieron los niños! Uno se sorprende de todo lo que los niños hacen. 

El primer proyecto que hicieron  los Pumas fue sobre el Altar del Dia de los Muertos, una tradición Mexicana muy popular. Luego el club se enfocó en  Las Posadas y los Danzantes Aztecas. Por ejemplo en el proyecto más reciente de los Danzantes Aztecas, los niños investigaron acerca de los trajes de los danzantes y también hicieron un proyecto de pintura de los símbolos de los trajes y los pintaron en canvas y  los mostraron en la feria. También hablaron sobre las danzas,  por qué se hacen y cómo esta danza se conecta directamente a la virgen de Guadalupe y otros  dioses Aztecas.

Otro proyecto muy bonito que también hicieron los niños fue  acerca de Los Alebrijes, que son unas criaturas fantásticas que son originarias de México. Los niños apoyados por los adultos hicieron esculturas de los Alebrijes y los pintaron de colores. Este proyecto fue algo muy grande y a todos les gustó, quedaron muy bonitos.

Yo pienso que una de las  cosas  favoritas de los  Pumas es contar con los amigos y hacer proyectos. A mi me gusta apoyar como voluntaria.

Los adultos estamos con los hijos y esto  les ayuda  a ellos a hacer los proyectos y  además no ayuda a tener  un mayor acercamiento entre los papás  y los hijos porque estamos todos y juntos hacemos lo que podemos. A veces lo difícil es reunirnos todos porque los papás trabajan o a veces no tienen tiempo. Por eso mismo uno en casa tal vez no les enseña acerca de nuestra cultura y los valores, pero  entonces lo estamos haciendo en 4H, ellos están aprendiendo de nuestra propia cultura.

Es algo muy especial para nosotros porque nos tomaron en cuenta como primer grupo Latino, somos todos  puros Latinos. Es un orgullo para nosotros los padres y espero que los niños también sientan orgullo de este programa que es de nosotros y nos toman en cuenta.  

Yo pienso que por ahora, con la pandemia,  pues no se puede contar con hacer proyectos o actividades pero yo pienso que podemos hacer reuniones tal vez por Zoom para juntar a los niños y no se desanimen en este tiempo y animarlos a continuar en  el  primer grupo de 4H que ha sido para Latinos.

The DC Pumas: Minnesota’s first Latino 4H Group

4H is a program with  the purpose of promoting the positive development of youth. This program traditionally focuses on agricultural themes in rural areas and currently promotes educational experiences outside of school through clubs, projects, and events for young people aged 5-19 in both rural and urban areas. Socorro Mercado, resident of Dodge County, MN, describes her experience supporting her kids in the creation of the first all Latino 4H club in MN; the DC Pumas.

4H, is a program that supports the creation of clubs and activities for kids. I was one of the first that started supporting the club for Latino kids in Dodge Country. It is a program where kids can learn to make projects. The Dodge County club, the one that my kids were in, is called Pumas and I like it because we are all Latinos and we speak Spanish. Every year, we create a project focused on culture and with these projects the Pumas have come far. 

When the clubs make projects, they enter to compete in the County Fair with all the clubs in the county and if that goes well, they go to compete in the State Fair with clubs from all over the state. The Pumas were specially invited to bring their projects to the State Fair. The adults that volunteered also went to the fair. When we got there, we saw all the kids that participated in 4H all over Minnesota. One says: “Wow the kids did all this!”. One is surprised to see all that the kids can make.

The DC Pumas 4h Club presented an Altar for the Death as a cultural project at Triton Schools in Dodge Center.

The first Puma’s first project was about the Day of the Dead altar, a very popular Mexican tradition. Later, the club focused on Las Posadas (The Inns) and Aztec Dancers. For example, in the most recent project about Aztec Dancers, the kids investigated the clothing of the dancers and they also made a painting project with symbols on the clothing. They painted on canvases and presented the pieces at the fair. They also spoke about the dances, why they were done and how they connected directly to Our Lady of Guadalupe and other Aztec gods. 

Another beautiful project that the kids also completed was about  alebrijes, fantasy creatures that originated from Mexico. The adults helped the kids make sculptures of alebrijes and paint the colors. The project was huge and everyone loved it, they turned out very beautiful.

I think that one of my favorite parts of the Pumas is talking with friends and making projects. I like to support as a volunteer. The adults are with the kids and this helps them make projects.

As recognition of their hard work invested in each of their projects, DC Pumas youth and volunteers are invited to the State Fair.

It helps kids and parents have a closer relationship because we are all together and we do all that we can. At times, it is difficult for everyone to meet because the parents work and sometimes they don’t have time. For this reason, it can be hard to teach about our culture and values to our kids at home but we know we can do this through 4H. The students are learning about our own culture. 

It is something very special for us because we have been named as the first Latino group. We are all Latinos. It is something of pride for the parents and I hope the kids also feel pride about this program. It belongs to us. 

During the pandemic, we can’t do much with projects or activities but I think we can meet sometimes over Zoom to get the kids together and keep them engaged during this time. It can encourage them to continue to be the first 4H group by and for Latinos.
