Trabajando durante la pandemia/Working during the pandemic

En la segunda parte, Mayra Monarrez continúa contandonos su experiencia de trabajo como trabajadora comunitaria en el Centro Clinic. 

Cuando comenzó la pandemia  había aprendizaje a distancia en la escuela para mis hijos y yo no estaba en la clínica.  Ahora yo trabajo a tiempo parcial, voy a la clínica todos los días y yo sé que voy a estar segura. Cuando entramos a la clínica, mi compañera de trabajo y yo necesitamos chequearnos nosotras y chequear la temperatura de los pacientes  antes de registrarlos para cita.

Al principio de todo esto, me hablaban mucho de la escuela, especialmente familias con niños que apenas vinieron a este país y que no hablan inglés y que tenían dificultades con la tecnología.  Yo sé que todo esto les afectó mucho a las familias. También recibíamos muchas llamadas preguntando qué iba a pasar en la clínica, qué iba a pasar con la escuela. 

Yo creo que decidimos trabajar en la clínica  para que toda la gente, y no solo la comunidad Latina se sintiera cómoda de llamar hacer  cualquier pregunta. Todavía recibimos muchas llamadas y si no tenemos la respuesta, pues tratamos de contactar un doctor, o un proveedor de salud. Como todo esto es nuevo, no siempre tienen una respuesta correcta. Yo creo que la gente Latina se ha sentido cómoda porque la clínica todavía está allí sí la necesitan. 

Nosotros trabajamos en coordinación con la clínica  Mayo donde  hay buenos doctores para cualquier cosa o pregunta y ellos están haciendo mucha investigación. Lo bueno es que nuestra clínica tiene mucho contacto con ellos. Sé que están tratando de hacer algo bueno porque este virus es algo nuevo que nadie conocía; ni los doctores, ni los más expertos saben todo acerca de este virus. 

Mientras tanto necesitamos decirle a la gente cómo llevar las mascarillas, lavarse las manos, guardar la distancia, y limpiar las superficies. Yo creo que eso puede evitar mucho contagio. Es nada más educar y llevar información a la gente Hispana porque también escucho mucho las noticias, y a veces las noticias no dicen mucho.  Es importante decir que no crean mucho lo que la gente dice o no crean mucho lo que las noticias dicen, es mejor informarse con expertos y de doctores.

Virtual Visits and Masks

In the second part, Mayra Monarrez continues describing her experience working as a community worker in the Center Clinic. 

When the pandemic started, there was distance learning in the school for my kids and I wasn’t in the clinic. Now, I am working part time. I go to the clinic everyday and I know that I am going to be safe. When we enter the clinic, my coworker and I need to check both the temperatures of ourselves and the patients before they check in for their appointment. 

At the beginning of all of this, I spoke a lot with families, especially with families with children at school. They barely made it to this place and don’t speak English and have difficulties with technology. I know that everything is greatly affecting families. Additionally, we received a lot of calls about what would happen in the clinic, what would happen with school. 

I think that we decided to work in the clinic so that everyone, not just the Latino community, could feel comfortable calling and asking any question. We have received a lot of calls and when we don’t have the answer, we try to contact a doctor or health provider. All of this is new, so there isn’t always a correct answer. I think that the Latino people feel comfortable with the clinic because we are still here if they need us. 

We are working in coordination with the Mayo Clinic where there are good doctors for every need or question and they are conducting a lot of research. I know that they are trying to do something good because this virus is something new that no one knew about; not the doctors nor the biggest experts know everything about this virus. 

Meanwhile, we need to tell the public to wear masks, wash hands, social distance, and clean surfaces. I think that this can avoid much disease. It’s nothing more than educating and giving information to all people because I’ve listened to the news a lot and sometimes it doesn’t say much. It is important to not believe everything that the public or the news say and instead, learn from experts and doctors.
